KLBA 2008 Winter Social at Camp Alexander at Emporia
KLBA would like to thank everyone who helped make the social in Emporia in February a great success. We were happy to see so many KLBA members and their families in attendance. It was a great way to reconnect with our Limousin friends.
The beef brisket dinner was prepared by Karen Campbell, Junior advisor, and the other moms, was delicious. We appreciate your hard work in the preparation and serving of the meal.
Carolyn Holland did a super job writing up the history of our two newest inductees into the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association Hall of Fame-Gail Ratliff and Gene and Virginia Raymond.
Everyone enjoyed the storytelling and songs about the folk life of the ranching, with the special interest on the Great Plains and Flint Hills regions. Dr. James Hoy of Emporia State University entertained the crowd with his stories and song. He has also written a book titled “Cowboys and Kansas: Stories from the Tallgrass Prairie”.
Bruce Schrag, KLBA President also recognized the Kansas Limousin Breeders that were recognized at the NALF banquet in Denver, these are people who have been involved in the Limousin Breed for over 30 years. KLBA Social Great Success
For the almost 100 attendees of the KLBA Social, which was held on a warm but cloudy day, was a nice time to for Limousin enthusiasts to get together and have a great time seeing old friends and meeting new ones. The afternoon started with the sign-up for those who wanted to test their skills at judging cattle. Brandon Fizer, instructor of Allen County Community College Judging Team and some of his students set up and conducted the judging contest. During this time those that wanted were able to get in a golf cart and head off to the pastures to look over the cattle in the pasture at Bohi Land and Cattle, or go into the barn and look over the show cattle and the very nice facilities. During this time Vickie Bohi was busy putting out some afternoon munchies which tasted wonderful. After the judging contest the attendees were welcomed to Bohi Land and Cattle by Doug Bohi he introduced some of the staff who helped get the things ready for the social. Les Olsen, KLBA President and Jordan Dye, KJLBA President welcomed everyone and thanked the Bohi family for putting on this nice event for KLBA. There was some special guests present, John Crow, KLBA Director, welcomed Ben and Ruth Price of Reading, Kansas and all of their family members, who traveled to the social so they could witness the honor which was being given to Ben and Ruth, they were being inducted into the KLBA Hall of Fame. Ben Price, their son, gave a synopsis of what his family had done in the early days of the Limousin Breed in the United States and the state of Kansas. One interesting items was that Ruth Price was the first, and so far the only, woman that has served on the North American Limousin Foundation board of directors. The family truly appreciated the award which was bestowed upon their family. The next item on the agenda was the awarding of the Judging contest winners. In the Junior division first place went to Madison Ratliff, Westphalia, 2nd to Wesley Callahan, Baldwin, 3rd to Jordan Dye, Paola and Katie Campbell and Chase Ratliff tied for fourth place. In that very competitive Senior division, Jim Earle of Smithville, Mo was first, second went to Mike Callahan, Baldwin, 3rd to Chris Campbell, Leavenworth and again a tie for 4th went to Carolyn Holland and Phil Shipman. We were then ready for the most wonderful meal which was prepared by Vickie Bohi, with help from some neighbors, it was presented on beautifully decorated serving tables. The evening concluded with a nice gift from the Bohi Land and Cattle, which everyone got to take home with them.
